Francis R. Burke, 91, of Newington, died peacefully on Sunday, September 25, 2011. Born in Hartford, son of the late Michael J. Burke and Cecelia (Martin) Burke, he was a Newington resident since 1953. Mr. Burke retired as a supervisor from the U.S. Postal Service after more than 30 years of employment and was a proud U.S. Army/Air Force Veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Newington, and the American Legion. A devoted brother and uncle, he leaves many nieces and nephews, and was pre-deceased by seven brothers and sisters, John T. Burke, Joseph M. Burke, Edward F. Burke, Raymond W. Burke, Mary Burke Custy, Margaret Burke Sullivan and Jane Burke Duba. His funeral service will begin on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Ave., Newington, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Newington Memorial.
