John M. Westergom, 95, of New Britain passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2012. He was the beloved husband of Celia (Wojtera) Westergom for 26 years. John was born in Paterson, NJ, son of the late Martin and Elizabeth (Stenger) Westergom; he was a New Britain resident most of his life and a member of St. Joseph's Church. He retired in 1981 after 43 years of employment with Pratt & Whitney. John was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II; served his country honorably in the Okinawa Campaign and occupation duty in Japan. Attaining the rank of Tech. Sgt., he served in the Central Pacific Theater of Operations as Line Chief Servicing Marine Corsair Fighters planes in V.M.F. 314, MAG 22 in the 2nd Marine Air Wing. John organized the Hardware City Detachment of the Marine Corps League in 1991and the Ladies Auxiliary in 1992; he served as Commandant from 1991 to 1998 and was a life member. He was a Past Commander and life member of V.F.W. Post 511. John is survived by his wife Celia; his daughters Andrea Westergom of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; his son John "Jack" Westergom and his wife Lynn Gahagan of Manhattan Beach, CA; his step-daughters Victoria Cronan of New Hampshire and Elaine Sivyer and her husband Kevin of Wales; his granddaughters Dr. Aimee Kreiger and her husband Dr. Andrew Kreiger of Manhattan Beach, CA, Kelly and Casey Cronan of Milford and great-grandson Gavin John Kreiger; his brother Joseph Westergom of Boynton Beach, Fl and several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his wife Marie (Gorczyca) Westergom and his sisters Ann Conlin, Theresa Way and Margaret Kilray. John's funeral service will begin on Monday, Aug. 20th, at 8:30 a.m. at the Burritt Hill Funeral Home, 332 Burritt St., New Britain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, New Britain. John will be laid to rest with military honors in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Britain. Relatives and friends are invited to call Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Burritt Hill.
